New IEEE Standard - Inactive-Reserved. This guide suggests surge arrester installation methods at distribution cable terminal poles in order to minimize the total impressed transient voltage on medium-voltage distribution cables. Grounding electrode techniques, pole ground values, and system ground grid values are not addressed or considered in this document.
Surge arrester installation intended to provide overvoltage protection of insulated, shielded conductors for distribution and transmission systems.
Over voltage protection of insulated conductors may be compromised with incorrect connection techniques. At present, there is little literature available that addresses connection practices for arresters to protect insulated, shielded conductors. The purpose of the guide will be to suggest suitable connection techniques to improve overvoltage protection schemes involving shielded conductors.
