Preface This is the third edition of the CSA A123.5, Asphalt shingles made from glass felt and surfaced with mineral granules . It supersedes the combined edition of CSA A123.1/A123.5, published in 2005 and 1998.  For this edition, the CSA A123.1 component has been removed.  This Standard provides a detailed sampling procedure integrated with the test methodology.  Scope 1.1 This Standard covers asphalt roofing shingles composed of impregnated glass felt, coated on both sides with asphaltic material and surfaced on the weather side with mineral granules. This Standard is designed for the evaluation of products as they are manufactured or as agreed upon between the purchaser/user and the manufacturer/supplier.  1.2 This Standard covers shingles that are  a) of single or multi-tab design b) single or multi-layer Note: Shingles meeting this specification are intended to be applied with a minimum 50 mm (2 in) headlap.  1.3 In cases where certain requirements or methods in other Standards conflict with the requirements or methods in this Standard, the conditions or changes that are included here take precedence.  1.4 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.  Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.  Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.  Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.  1.5 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
